Solease Barner Author Spotlight & Book Blitz 12/31/15

 Book One in the Trilogy
WHO- Holiday Towley is a loving perfect wife and mother that holds a deep dark secret.
WHAT- Holiday’s dark secret is revealed when her daughter’s safety is compromised by unforeseen circumstances. Holiday’s life becomes more complex when she finds out the truth of who she really is.
WHERE-In a richly beautiful suburban neighborhood surrounded by astonishing views in Michigan.
WHY- Holiday soon finds out she has a special gift that will change her life and maybe protect her daughter from the secret life that she has kept hidden.
REVELATION – I have found that the truth is always better for the one you love than a lie. I have only recently gained this insight. My life is crazy right now. I was satisfied with my life as it was, and would have continued with it. Never in my wildest dreams would I have envisioned being forced to go up against a mother figure. I have been taken from my comfort zone and placed in unfamiliar territory. I am not scared though, just willing to do whatever I can to regain a small portion of sanity. I know it may come with a price, but today the price will not be me or my family. She declared war on me first.

Review
Readers cannot distance themselves from Holiday’s affectionate family moments or from her emotionless murders because she recounts her own actions, making the sex scenes steamier and the killings more shuddersome.

A tale as old as time—a girl, tall and wispy, hair the color of the sun, eyes as blue as the sky, caught in a love triangle with the noblest of men…Not in this book honey!

Okay so maybe I am caught up in a love triangle, but I’m sure as hell not running through a field of daisies in a sun dress. My name is Elizabeth and I’ve managed to avoid men for most of my life. I wasn’t a nun by any means, but I know what the hot guys want—and it usually isn’t me. How I got myself involved in a love triangle with one sexy photographer and a millionaire bachelor, who had women worshiping the ground he walked on, is beyond me. Yet, here I am, attempting to navigate waters that I’ve never expected to. Trying to figure out which man was right for me, dealing with my family—and have I told you about the paparazzi? Well, it’s all really making me rethink the situation. Who do I trust? Who’s being genuine? What should I do if both men are perfect for me in different ways? How the hell am I supposed to choose just one? Or better yet do I have to choose just one?

excerpt

I needed time to at least talk to Simon and explain there was somebody else—but Spencer wouldn’t listen…

I had mind blowing sex last night but I didn’t remember making this official. I still needed to talk to Simon, at the very least he deserved—he deserved someone better than me. That was what this all boiled down to. I had turned into the one thing I used to despise, a careless, thoughtless, wishy-washy, Barbie and a slutty one at that. Everything had felt so good in the moment, but I was drunk and not thinking. What am I going to say to Simon? Fuck, what am I going to say to Spencer?

“Spencer I—”

“Don’t,” he said, chuckling and holding his hand up. “Don’t even start with the excuses. You chose to be here with me. Why the fuck do you keep doing this to me if you’re in love with him?” he roared, slamming his fist into the mattress.

“I don’t know if I’m in love with him—”

Cutting me off, he stood from the bed, his deep voice shook the walls as he spoke. “Now!” he spat, as he moved closer to me. “Choose now!” he growled.

“I can’t,” I said back as sternly as I could.

“You can’t or you won’t?” Taking a step back, he turned from me shoving his hands through his tousled hair, the muscles in his back flexed, and I nearly went knees to the floor.

“You can’t have us both, Elizabeth. You either stay with me, be with only me, love only me—or fucking leave.”

His words were raw and savage as he turned back to face me. I couldn’t talk, so I simply stared up at him. This isn’t happening, is it? Things were perfect five minutes ago, now everything is just wrong. It’s all wrong.

Coming quickly toward me, he grabbed my upper arms, taking me to lie down on the bed. He stared into my eyes before running his hand up the inside of my thigh. Two fingers slid deep inside me. Who was I kidding? Just seeing him made me aroused and arguing with him only made it worse.

THE RAKE’S IRISH LADY by BARBARA MONAJEM RELEASE DAY BLITZ & Rafflecopter giveaway 12/30/15

The Rake’s Irish Lady
by Barbara Monajem
Series: Scandalous Kisses, #2
Genre: Historical Romance – Regency
Publisher: Soul Mate Publishing
Cover Designer: Anna Spies
Release Date: December 30, 2015

ONE WILD NIGHT . . .
Widowed & lonely, Bridget O’Shaughnessy Black indulges herself in a night of pleasure.
After all, she’s in disguise. And the baby girl? An unexpected blessing…until an old flame claims the child as his own to force Bridget to marry him.

ONE DETERMINED LADY. . .
Many women pursued Colin Warren, but only one climbed in his bedchamber window. When Bridget does it for the second time, she doesn’t have fun in mind. Colin is unfit to be a parent, and yet he has no choice but to acknowledge the little girl.

RISKING EVERYTHING FOR LOVE
Circumstances force Bridget and Colin together, yet grave differences divide them. Can love bridge the chasm that keeps them apart?

Bridget shouldn’t let herself smile at Colin, because that invited a smile in return. The kind with dimples and a hunger that reached his eyes.

Probably reached hers, too, so she sighed and turned away. Yearning to touch him had become a physical ache, and even a brush of his hand, much less a boost on her derriere, made it a thousand times worse.

They wouldn’t catch up to the others tonight, but tomorrow, once the rain was over, they would find an alternate route. One more night of self-control…

She was a fool to want him, but she couldn’t help it. What had come over her? Suddenly, stupidly, she was willing to risk another illegitimate child by him.

They were almost at the inn. She dreaded another restless night. She needed something to distract her. “Where are those apples? The horses deserve a treat.”

Colin passed her the basket. She took four of the wrinkled apples. They pulled up in front of a battered old building with weathered timbers and dormers peeking from under a thatched roof. No eager servant came rushing out of the inn to greet them.

“House!” Colin bellowed, opening the coach door. Without bothering to let down the steps, he took Bridget by the waist and lifted her down into the rain. This time his hands didn’t linger. “Hurry up and give them the damned apples. Let’s get out of this bloody rain.”

“Would you stop fussing?” she cried. “We’ll catch up to Martin eventually.”

“That’s not what I’m fussing about,” he snapped, heading for the rear of the coach. Bridget offered apples to the wheeler and leader on one side and then stalked around to treat the others.

A spare, grizzled man limped out of the inn. “Come in, come in,” he said, but his eyes widened at the sight of Colin, in his wet but obviously costly clothing, unearthing two valises from the boot. “I’m that sorry, sir, but I don’t have accommodation for the likes of you.”

“Does your roof leak?” Colin demanded. “Do the fireplaces smoke?”

“No sir, but—”

“Will the horses be warm and dry too?” Bridget piped up, and suddenly she began to shiver.

“Aye, the stables is fine,” the landlord said.

“Then we’ll do fine, too.” Colin dropped the valises on the doorstep. “Warm and dry is all we ask, and I’ll pay handsomely for it.”

A stout lady in an old-fashioned mobcap appeared in the doorway. “What are you waiting for, Stan? I’ll light a fire in the guest chamber. Let the gentleman and his missus in before they catch their deaths.”

*Oh, dear.*

The landlord still seemed uneasy. “I’m sorry, sir, but we’ve only the one small guest room, and not even a private parlor.”

“We’ll do fine,” Bridget and Colin said simultaneously. Their hands touched and twined together. Clung together, as if one or the other of them—or both—was afraid the other would let go. Or as if they were about to plunge off a cliff and holding on for dear life.

Bridget’s heart began to pound. She slid her gaze surreptitiously toward Colin. He wasn’t looking at her but rather straight ahead. A drop of water rolled from his wet hair, over his brow, and down to his upper lip. His tongue flicked out and licked it up.

Desire roared through her. She shuddered. His right dimple appeared, but so briefly she almost didn’t see it.

The landlady bustled away, and the landlord grabbed the valises. “Just you follow me, then. I’m Stan Butterworth, and that’s my rib, Martha.” He led them through the taproom. “You’ll want to change out of them wet clothes first of all, and then we’ll see to your supper.” He preceded them up a narrow flight of stairs. “My Martha’s a right good cook, and we had mutton stew to our dinner, but it won’t be what you’re accustomed to.”

“I’m sure it will be delicious,” Bridget managed. Could food possibly have been farther from her mind?

“It can get right rowdy in here on a fair evening,” Mr. Butterworth said, “but we won’t have much custom tonight, what with the storm and all. You’ll have a peaceful sleep.”

Colin made a sound between a snort and a laugh, but he didn’t let go of her hand.

Winner of the Holt Medallion, Maggie, Daphne du Maurier, Reviewer’s Choice and Epic awards, Barbara Monajem wrote her first story at eight years old about apple tree gnomes. She published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young. When they grew up, she turned to writing for grownups, first the Bayou Gavotte paranormal mysteries and then Regency romances with intrepid heroines and long-suffering heroes (or vice versa). Some of her Regencies have magic in them and some don’t (except for the magic of love, which is in every story she writes).

Barbara loves to cook, especially soups, and is an avid reader. There are only two items on her bucket list: to make asparagus pudding and succeed at knitting socks (or maybe tea cozies). She’ll manage the first but doubts she’ll ever accomplish the second. This is not a bid for immortality but merely the dismal truth (hence the tea cozies, which she hasn’t tried yet). She lives near Atlanta, Georgia with an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays.

Can I help you?” I asked, turning to face Sebastian Lyall.

His whitish-blond hair was perfectly coifed in messy spikes, his light blue, button down shirt matching the color of his eyes. The last thing I needed was to look into them. He’d had me tongue tied several times in the past and it ended up making me look like an idiot.

Smirking, Sebastian stepped closer, holding out a hand. “Would you care to dance?”

Rolling my eyes, I nodded toward the group of women in the corner who watched his every move. “Why don’t you ask one of your groupies? I’m sure they’d be more than willing.”

He and his brothers, Micah and Zayne, along with Colin, were hot commodities in our pack. They were all royal wolves—the elite. No female could resist them, except me that is. I couldn’t complain though; the royals helped make our pack invincible.

Sebastian leaned closer, his gaze serious. “I asked you, Tyla Rand. Besides, there’s something I need to tell you.”

Why do we have to dance in order for you to spill? Just say it now.”

Chuckling, he grabbed my hand and pulled me to the dance floor. “What’s the matter, afraid to be close to me? I promise I won’t bite.”

Right. Huffing, I reluctantly walked onto the dance floor just when the tempo changed to a slower, sensual beat. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” I growled. Other couples joined in and held each other, swaying to the music, while I stood there like a fool.

Grabbing my other hand, Sebastian pulled my arms around his shoulders and put his around my waist. “See? Not so bad.”

I glared up at him. “Just keep your hands from wandering. Now what do you want to talk about?” His hands snaked lower and I growled. “Keep it up and see where your hands end up next.”

Chuckling, he lifted them higher. “I like watching your cheeks blush. It’s sexy as hell.”

Excerpt

A long moment passed where they watched each other, two strangers on the verge of becoming so much more. The full impact hit her, left her a little shaky inside but not anxious. No, excitement sped her pulse.
She licked her lips, already envisioning what they’d do together. “So, am I right?”
He slid his hungry gaze to her breasts. The points stood erect, and the sheen of her skin betrayed how hot she’d gotten from touching herself.
“Oh yes, I’ll fuck you, my Harley. Sometimes hard and fast. Other times so damn slowly, you’ll beg me to fill you up.” He met her eyes. “I’ll take you so often and in so many ways, you’ll want me to be the center of your world as you are now mine.”
He released her wrists and covered one breast with his hand. The hard point pushed against his callused skin, and a jolt of electricity raced down her spine. He captured the tip she’d teased minutes ago. The small pinch arched her back.
“Do you like that?”
She flicked her gaze from his long fingers holding her nipple to his face and nodded. “Do it again.”
One corner of his mouth rose. He rolled the tip, and she gasped. Another tug clenched her core. “Beautiful. I can’t wait to watch that look pass over your face when I fuck you.”
She whimpered.
The smile giving him a roguish look turned wicked. “You do want me to ram my cock inside you and make you come apart around my dick”—he ran the tip of his tongue over his upper lip—“don’t you?”
“I…I…” She couldn’t get the words out.
He released her hands and sat back so he knelt between her thighs. Her attention shifted from the desire stamped on his face to the long length of his erection molded by his pants.
“Touch it.”

AboutTheAuthor

A true romantic at heart, Nancy Corrigan is convinced there’s a knight in shining armor for every woman (or man), but you won’t find damsels in distress in her stories. She adores pairing alpha heroes with women strong enough to match them and bring them to their knees. She also enjoys flipping the traditional roles in romances because her motto is—love and people should never be forced to conform to anyone’s norm.

She holds a degree in chemistry and has worked in research but now focuses on ensuring quality. She considers it the perfect outlet for her as she’s the first to admit she has some OCD tendencies. It carries over into her writing life too. While engrossed in a novel, she has a habit of forgetting to eat and sleep. Fortunately, she’s married to her own knight in shining armor who understands her oddities and loves her anyway. They reside in Pennsylvania with their three children, dog, snake and guinea pigs. Hosted By: Francessca’s Romance Reviews

Synopsis

Boone Richards

Olympia Olsen is exactly where she belongs, but I’m not sure she believes it.

I infiltrated my enemy’s compound to bring her back into my life, before almost losing her a second time. Now I finally have what I want…sort of. It’s hard to enjoy mind-blowing sex and sweet, tender love when your club is in chaos, your brothers at odds, and your father is fighting just to survive. Let’s not forget the man who tortured my girl has gone into hiding and left me to pick up the shattered shards from her broken heart.

After all she’s endured, I’m not sure she wants the outlaw lifestyle I’ve always embraced. She is old lady material, through and through. I have no doubt. The question is: Does she believe it? The bigger question: Does she want it?

After all the insanity, I’m ready for some serious, f%#cking fireworks, the kind that dazzle your mind and send chills down your spine. I can only hope Olympia’s by my side to enjoy them.

Olympia Olsen.

Boone Richards came for me, now he’s determined to rescue me…from myself.

The question is: Will I let him? He’s everything I’ve always wanted, so it should be an easy answer; but it’s not. My body screams yes, yet my mind isn’t convinced. As the new Soul Scorcher’s President, Boone’s MC is his priority. He needs a strong woman at his side — a fierce female not afraid to speak her mind, a woman who will love both him and his young boys without reservation. Can that be me?

I won’t lie. I’ve never wanted a man more, but there’s never been so much at stake. I’m a woman who has been through the scorching fire and come out alive, but until the arsonist and my abductor are dead or behind bars, I’m a target. I can’t let the ones I love most get caught in the crossfire.

I’ve lived through a firetrap, a firefight, and survived the firestorm. I’m so f%&king ready to enjoy some fireworks with Boone by my side.

Fireworks is the fourth and final installment in the Scorched Souls Serial-Series. It should NOT be read as a standalone. You will want to read Firetrap (book one), Firefight (book two), and Firestorm (book three) first. Each book builds on the previous installment. The information in the prior books is crucial to understanding the next. This fourth book contains a long-time-coming HEA. Hope you enjoy the conclusion to Boone and Olympia’s story!

Please be advised: The entire Scorched Souls Series is for readers 18 and older due to sexual content, violence, language, and dark subject matters. You have been warned. There are BDSM elements in all four books.

Excerpt

“You ready?” Olympia rested her hand on my thigh, igniting a spark only her touch could create.
I was propelled from my worry-session back to the present moment, where I needed to keep my attention focused.

Olympia’s BMW was parked in a visitors’ space close to the entrance, the engine off. A handful of Harleys stood out from the long rows of vehicles – cages, in biker-speak. Not one car compared to the Hogs with their chrome gleaming in the morning sun, making me wish I was on my bike with Olympia pressed against my back, arms secured around me, roaring down the highway and devouring the pavement like a hungry beast.

How fucked up was it that she’d only ever ridden with me on my street bike?

I was the acting president for a one-percent MC and my bitch had never been on my Harley. I actually chuckled in spite of the fucked up situation, although the sound was hollow.
“Did I miss the joke?”
“No, babe. No joke. Just thinking.” I heaved my large frame from the confining front seat and rolled my shoulders. “Let’s do this.”
“Are you going to tell me?” She sounded annoyed and tired, slamming her door harder than necessary.
“Just thinking about how you still haven’t been on my Harley. Something unheard of considering my feelings for you.”
She moved to my side and took my hand. “I’m not going anywhere. We’ll ride once this storm is over.”
I didn’t voice my next thought.

What if the storm never stopped? What if happiness remained some elusive dream?
I might not deserve happiness, but Olympia sure as fuck did. Maybe I was holding her back from a better life. The idea I should give her up crossed my mind, but only for a second.

I was selfish sonofabitch, and I’d been waiting for a woman like Olympia my entire life. Giving her up wasn’t an option. She was mine and I wanted to make sure she knew it. I needed inside her – now. My vow to wait suddenly seemed like a prison sentence.
Perhaps an early release was in order.

About The Author

 photo Author Image_zpsptmzn76v.jpg

C.L. Riley is an author with four books to her credit…under a different name. A name she intends to keep top secret for an extended moment. (If you know the “real” C.L., keep it hush-hush, please!) And, no, she’s not a huge, blockbuster author with a seven figure book contract, though she’d be all right with that. Who wouldn’t?

She loves to read almost anything but has a major soft spot for broken, bad boy, alpha males, and has found a new love for MC (biker) romances. She enjoys reading and writing dark fantasy, paranormal romance, urban fantasy, erotic suspense, new adult romance, young adult…Whoa! Let’s slow it down! After all, space is limited. Clearly, she is fond of reading and writing an array of stories.

As a little girl, she was obsessed with genies (and their bottles) and grew up watching Barbara Eden’s I Dream of Jeannie. In her latest book, Bottle Banished: Dreaming of Genie, Ms. Riley has created a delicious mix of fantasy served up dark; steamy sex with those bad boys she likes so much; plenty of magical mayhem; and what she hopes are a few good giggles and laughs. She also includes a variety of references to pop-culture, past and present. Think Funyuns! And don’t forget love and romance, rough around the edges, of course, are major ingredients to her mouthwatering recipe!

As you might imagine, she is WISHING you would join her on her latest genie journey. Climb on that magic carpet and get ready for one hell of a ride!

Mitch Justice Series By Kathi S Barton Release Day & Winner Announced 12/28/15

Mitch Riley was a haunted man, and being a necromancer didn’t have much to do with what haunted him. A troubled childhood left him withdrawn and short tempered, so when he received a summons that he was being sued by the foster parents who had abused him, he didn’t take it well at all. And their attorney? None other than a vamp. There was nothing much worse than a vamp in Mitch’s opinion.

Victoria Graham, or Vinnie her mother had nicknamed her, wasn’t expecting the man her clients were suing to be her mate, and a necromancer. She would have refused the case had she known she’d be walking into a den of necromancers. She had grown up on horror stories that necromancers were the one thing that could kill her kind, and it was clear the man hated her very existence…. But when he touched her, she’d lost control of her magic…and her mind too apparently.

Prologue
Vinnie watched his face. She could see that he was pissed off. About what, she had a good idea at the moment, but the way he had come into the room like he owned it made her think it was less about the lawsuit and more about her—a vampire. She’d heard from Gilda, her secretary, that Mr. Riley did not play well with others, and not at all with vampires. Vinnie hoped that that part might have been wrong. Apparently not. “You’re very beautiful.” Both of them flushed, and he looked away from her. “But be that as it may, Miss Graham, I will not need your services now or in the future.” “They’re not going to go away. And neither will I. There are more than just you in this suit, Mr. Riley. They’ve named nineteen people in this stupidity. And if only one of you lose to them, they will go after more stupid claims.” He turned and looked at her, and Vinnie could see that he was getting madder by the second. “I can go away, leave you to whatever it is you do, but they’re going to come at you. And if they can’t get it from you, they’ll sue Mr. Bennett here.” “They’re working on that now.” Vinnie glanced at Steele when he spoke, but she watched Mitch. “They contacted my firm this morning, saying that I’m harboring you and they want their money. I’m not entirely sure what they think that means, but I’m sure that their lawyer will explain. I have a meeting with them next week.” “You can’t be serious. Why are they going after you?” Vinnie started to tell Mitch why, but he answered his own question. “I see. You’re the rich and powerful Steele Bennett, right? Will they go after Addie next? Or her grandmother?” “I’m sure that they have.” Mitch looked at her again. “This isn’t going to go away. Newspapers have picked it up. A television crew was at their home just last week, and was showing how much they’ve suffered because of the way you and the others as children have done them wrong.” “We did them wrong? Do you have any idea what we had to suffer living there? The things that we had to do for a single meal a day?” She said nothing, and Mitch started pacing. The man could say more in one step than most people said in a whole conversation. “I ran away. I was only there for less than a year. And in that time…in that time I was treated with atrocities that would…it was not a safe place for a child, much less a bunch of us.” When Gilda stood up, Vinnie shook her head at her. She knew things too. Things that had happened to this young man that should never have happened to an adult, much less a child. When Gilda sat down, Vinnie looked at Hugo. He nodded once and picked up her briefcase, as well as her coat. If Mitch wouldn’t help her, then there was nothing much more she could do to make him. As they made their way to the door, Hugo stepped in front of her when someone or something moved beside her. “She wants to know if you’re related to Mr. Horatio Graham.” Vinnie grabbed the back of the chair she was standing next to and nodded at Mitch. “She said that she’s glad that you’re no longer with him, but she wants to know if you killed him or did he get caught at something?”
“He was staked. About ten years ago.” Vinnie looked around and saw no one, but she could feel it. A presence that she’d felt before since coming into this house. “Who’s there?” “She said that it’s not important right now. And you should know that you brought her here with you.” Mitch sat in the chair across from her and stared at something to her immediate left. “The woman is older, about sixtyish, I’d say. Dark hair and wearing a dress from about the turn of the century. I’d say she’s been gone for about fifty years.” Vinnie moved around the chair then and sat down. She could feel Hugo there. He would never leave her, but Gilda was standing back. If this was who she thought it was, then Gilda would be in danger. All of them would be. “Her name…ask her if she’s Millicent. I don’t know if I ever knew her last name.” Mitch nodded. “I see. And you can speak to her? See her even?” “I can. You can’t, I take it.” Vinnie said she couldn’t see the dead. “I can. Did you know that before coming here?” Vinnie stood up. She was slightly dizzy and terrified, but she stood straight now. “I’m sorry to have bothered you, Mr. Riley. I’m sure that without your help, the Bruces will win a suit or two, and that might satisfy them for a while.” “I asked you a question, Miss Graham. Did you know that we were a house of necromancers when you came here?”  She hadn’t, and she doubted that she would have come had she known. But as she made her way to the door, nearly running now, she could only think to get away, get her little family away. But Mitch stepped in front of her just as she reached for the door. Backing away from him, she didn’t even look at him as she answered. “I didn’t, as a matter of fact. I wish I had known, but I’m guessing that there really isn’t any way that you could advertise such a thing and expect people to believe you. I’d very much like to go.” “She’s not here right now. Steele sent her away. For now.” The relief was profound. And before she realized what was happening, she felt herself being lifted up. Hugo had her. But when she looked into his face, it wasn’t that of her bodyguard, but of Mitch Riley. “Let me down.” He held her still, taking her to what she thought was the kitchen. “There is nothing in here that I can use to make me feel better. I’d very much like to be left to go please.” “Hush.” Vinnie started to snap at him, but she was sat down on a table and a wet cloth was slapped in her hand. “What does she have over you? It must be big for a badassed vamp like you to get yourself all worked up about.” Vinnie laid the dishtowel on the table and stood up. She was stronger now, more than likely due to being so angry. But when she started to leave the room, Mitch grabbed her by the arm. Vinnie felt her temper snap, and she let her power go.

One night can change everything.

That’s what they always say, and for now, vampire hunter Delia hopes it’s true. After years of mediocre performances, she’s still nothing more than a grunt in her hunter league, stuck on surveillance duty and low-level vamp busts.

So, when her informant drops an amazing lead in her lap, she jumps at the opportunity to take down the region’s rumored vampire leader at an invite-only masquerade ball. Clad in a mask and uncomfortable dress, Delia throws herself into the fray—only to realize she’s woefully unprepared for the night that awaits her.

Also… Some ridiculously attractive guy dressed as the Fool keeps distracting her.

One night. One job. One man. One chance to change her life.

All she has to do is not screw it up.

The Fool is a novella intended for readers aged 18+, and is the prologue for the paranormal romance serial Games We Play.

excerpt

Music drifted languidly from speakers around the dance hall, and couples whirling around the floor barely missed a beat, moving this way and that, too wrapped up in themselves to notice when the songs changed. It was a more appealing sight than the one she was used to seeing on a dance floor: Kain and his boys grinding up on drunk girls, their sense of rhythm all but absent. Most here were intoxicated, but the costumes gave a degree of modesty, and no one, as far as she could see, was mashing pelvises.

She’d had a few conversations since leaving the bathroom, but the women flying solo were more interested in finding someone to spend the evening with, while most of the men fed her the same dull lines over and over again: Why was she alone? Where was her drink? Did she know her eyes sparkled like emeralds?

Vomit.

Delia had just barely escaped the last guy—his breath rank with alcohol—who kept guffawing in her face whenever he cracked a joke. So there she stood, hovering on the outskirts of the dance floor, unsure of her place.

Arms wrapped around herself, she watched a nearby couple as they danced. They were both young and slim, effortlessly gliding around like they’d done it a hundred times before. Maybe they had.

She blinked quickly, bringing herself out of her daze, and tightened her grip on her clutch as the jingling of bells grew louder. The Fool had found her again.

Throughout the night she’d spied that ridiculous gold and purple mask at a safe distance out of the corner of her eye. Sometimes she actually turned and looked, only to find him chatting with one or two other people.

“Delia,” he said, dipping his head cordially as he stood beside her.

She pursed her lips, noting the barely-there gap between their bodies.

“Fool.”

She returned her gaze to the dancing couple. So elegant—hypnotic, even.

“Did you find who you were looking for?”

It took her a second to process the question, and she glanced his way curiously.

“What?”

“Earlier,” the Fool continued with a nod in the direction of the garden. “You ran after someone. Did you find them?”

“No.” Delia squared her shoulders and let out a small sigh. “Just a look-alike. I don’t think the person I want to see will show tonight.”

“Pity.” The Fool sniffed, his gaze wandering the dancing couples. “Fortunate for me, however.”

She almost laughed. “Why?”

“Because now I can enjoy the pleasure of your company… uninterrupted.”

Delia forced away the incredulous look that flashed across her face, her lips threatening to turn upward in a smile, and finally faced him.

The Fool, however, continued to study the dancers, ignoring her narrowed stare.

“Does this usually work on girls?”

“What?” he asked innocently, sparing her a quick glance, a few of his bells jingling.

“This faux-formal crap you’re spouting.” She cocked her head to the side as she waited for a response.

Slowly, a smile spread across his face, lips pulling back to reveal a set of perfectly straight, perfectly white teeth. “I don’t know. Does it?”

“No,” she replied quickly, turning toward the dance floor again just before their eyes could meet. “It doesn’t.”

“Shame. And here I was thinking I’d been doing so well.”

“That’s presumptuous of you,” Delia remarked, her head tilting to one side again, mimicking the slow way the man dipped his female partner. Her fair blonde tresses tickled the floor, and they grinned at one another. Despite herself, Delia suddenly found herself grinning too.

“Hmm…”

Her skin prickled at the deep rumbly quality of his voice, but she was determined not to react to it.

“… Perhaps I can remedy that.”

She almost told him it was unlikely, all the while feeling a little guilty for her rudeness. After all, he had scared off that psychotic Donovan vamp earlier. Even if he didn’t realize it, she actually owed him. However, before she could get another word in, the Fool snapped at a passing waitress, and the woman hurried toward them with a tray of drinks in hand.

“You seem to have lost the one I brought you earlier,” the Fool noted as he handed her a glass, which Delia took almost begrudgingly. He then looked to the waitress and gently touched her arm as he said, “And if you can manage, perhaps a red wine for myself?”

“Of course, sir.” The woman gave a small nod before hurrying away, moving with more purpose than any of the servers Delia had seen all night. She raised an eyebrow at the Fool again; he wasn’t a vamp power-player, but he had to be someone important in the human world.

He caught her studying him, and then flashed a charming smile as Delia pretended to be admiring his bells.

“Champagne gives me a headache,” he told her, as if that explained the drink request.

Delia shrugged. “Sucks to be you.” The new glass of bubbly liquid, tinged with a rose-gold hue, slid down smoothly, but she vowed that this would be the last of the night. “I love champagne.”

“I know.” He then reached up and brushed his fingertip over her cheek. Delia flinched back, nostrils flaring in alarm. Even after his arm fell back by his side, she felt the warmth of his touch on her skin. “You get a little blush every time you drink it. Quite endearing.”

“Well, that’s some extra-close attention you’ve been paying to me,” she forced out, her breath catching at the intensity of his stare. She cleared her throat as she stepped back, flustered. Genuinely flustered. Because a hot guy in a stupid mask was doting on her, and Delia wasn’t accustomed to men doting on her. The guys in her history weren’t exactly the doting type.

But then again, there really was only one reason a man would dote on her…

Her blush darkened at the thought.

Toasting him with her champagne glass, she took another few steps back, alarmed that he followed slowly.

“Thanks for the drink… again,” she told him. Then, without another word, Delia turned on the spot and cut across the dance floor, not stopping until there was some distance between her and the Fool.

For a short time, she tried to distract herself with the sea of dancers, the swirl of fabric and the flash of masks slowly blending into one living, breathing organism.

Through the fleeting gaps between couples, she saw him. The Fool. Watching her from across the room, he stood quite still amidst all the twirling and whirling, through the swishes of fabric, his glass of red wine in hand. She wasn’t sure why she decided to stay there, directly across from him. Maybe it was the fact that after a night in sultry, but painful, heels, her feet finally decided enough was enough. Time to stay in one place for a while.

Delia chose to ignore the fact that every time she did try to move, her feet were like heavy stones, keeping her in place, in the Fool’s line of sight.
